Monthly Update-April/May 2024
It's been a while so Sean Mason joins us for a packed slate of game discussion!
Strawhat lived out his dream(not really) of being a cowboy in Red Dead Redemption 2, swung through New York once again in Spider-Man, and read Connor's favorite VN Clannad.
Parrott embraced his strategy game love he didn't even know he had with Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, plus he played as usual a bunch of smaller games
Sean glows about Rebirth, Sandland, and many other jrpgs he loves. We also might have some One Piece discussion but you will have to listen to find out why!
Top 15 Trails of Cold Steel Characters
We continue our journey through Trails characters rankings with the Cold Steel arc! With so many characters, we made this one a top 15! That still doesn’t stop Straw from getting disgusted and flabbergasted... Sean and Daloofus join us for a list that everyone is happy with yet no one is!
Top 10 Most Hated Characters
Time to table all the usual positivity and focus on something we can all relate to... characters we just don't like! Whether we find them to be annoying, a nuisance, or really truly hate them from the bottom of our hearts we all have those characters that we just don't like. Join us as we each list our top 10 most hated characters... and read some fiery write ins as well!
Monthly Update - March 2024
I am once asking you to give Dragon's Dogma your financial support.
Also Strawhat got some DKC nostalgia tripping in with Kaze and the Wild Masks, played through Vanillaware's latest looker with Unicorn Overlord, and did NOT have any reality TV updates.
Parrott relived the glory days of Dragon Ball Z with Kakarot, got through the sidescroller revival of Prince of Persia the Lost Crown, and beat Quake before Connor.
There's an important message somewhere in this episode, but don't think about it too much and enjoy!
Platformer Club Retrospective
In 2023 our hosts, along with members of our Discord, made it their goal to plan a platformer a month with selections spanning multiple different console generations. Join us as we reflect on each game we played, and of course, rank them!
Top 10 DS Games
Join us as we discuss the best games on DS with special guests Gremlin and Frog!
Monthly Update - February 2024
Big releases this last month. That, of course, did not matter to our resident small game expert, but Strawhat and Connor both spent a good chunk of the month trying to get through Persona 3 Reload, while Straw went double duty and got through Yakuza Infinite Wealth as well.
On the small game front, Parrott gave Bomb Rush Cyberfunk a go and enjoyed the nice hand drawn art of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, while Connor played the criminally underappreciated Momodora: Moonlit Farewell.
At some point, as is tradition, Straw gives us the state of the union for the month's Reality TV. So, as usual, please keep a mind of your mental health.
Longtalk-Mario Party 1 and 2
Ed and I talk about the first two Mario Party games. Mario Party 1 and hates you but we love the mini games from both anyway.
Top 10 Couples in Video Games
Love is in the air, so what better time is there to talk about the best couples in video games. We have some simping, some strange picks, and the usual list shenanigans.
Monthly Update - January 2024
We're in the thick of winter now, and some of us would say that's just swell.
This month, Strawhat played Elden Ring.
Parrott got waist deep into Blood: Fresh Supply, tango'd with the mysteries in Alan Wake 2, and revisited the Tom Clancy classic Rainbow Six Vegas.
Connor finally finished Death's Door, christened his Steam Deck with Spark the Electric Jester, and is currently losing his mind trying to finish Baldr Sky.
The cold months are the best time to hole up with a good game, movie, or book, so why not take a moment to join us for a chill chat and find a nice piece of media for yourself to enjoy.
The Persona 4 Character Poll
A few months back the listeners (as well as the hosts) all ranked their top 10 favorite Persona 4 characters... and sparks will fly as they are finally revealed! Everyone has strong opinions on who the best members of this famous cast are, but who will end up being correct when the dust settles and this DEFINITIVE list ends the debate for good!
Top 10 Games of 2023
Monthly Update - December 2023
Our first year of the show comes to a close and our second begins! Thank you to all who have been enjoying our rambling thus far.
This time around Strawhat doubled his cleaning duty quota with Chibi-Robo, climbed the great Pizza Tower, and coped about the future prospects of BioWare by revisiting Dragon Age Inquisition.
Parrott got to Pokémon Violet now that it's "stable," experienced the relaxing duty of a border agent in Papers Please, and brawled his way through River City Girls 2.
Connor experienced mechakino with Armored Core VI right at the close of the year, binged Utawarerumono and reveled in its high volume of eccentric sounding names, and finally decided to experience Eternights for himself for the definitive take.
Have a Happy New Year!
Top 10 SNES Games
It's the most wonderful time of the year and what better way to celebrate that by debating our top 10 SNES games. Arcitee and Daloofus join strawhat to talk about(and get mad about) all the games that made the list!
Monthly Update - November 2023
Still in a food coma from the holiday? Good, because we have another update for you.
Strawhat finally finished off the legendary trilogy with BioShock Infinite, was pleasantly surprised by the Yakuza spin-off The Man Who Erased His Name, and then found another reality show to watch called Love in the Wild.
Parrott got a dose of genie action with Shantae and the Seven Sirens, played the odd little indie platformer Demon Turf, and enjoyed the latest Criterion level Cinema Classic that is Mortal Kombat 1's story mode.
Connor came in out the gate with a hot take on Eternal Darkness, wants to spread the virus of Mosa Lina, and needs everyone to enjoy a little more Ben Stiller in their lives with Mystery Men.
There was going to be a multiplayer minute in there somewhere, but Connor forgot, so that information will be lost to time.
Top 10 Crossbell Characters
It's finally here. Connor, Daloofus, and Strawhat discuss the results to our top 10 Crossbell characters poll. Parrott may or may not have been punished for abandoning Zero
Monthly Update - October 23
With great fortune guiding them, the lads made it through Spook Month with nary a disappearance or dismemberment but there were plenty of distractions.
Strawhat got into some grisly murder mystery intrigue in with Rain CODE, some very-much-not-that fun with Super Mario Wonder, and had pleasant yet brief journey to The Outer Worlds.
Parrott got everything he could possibly ask for this month with Spider-Man 2 and An Actually Good Sonic Game, then chilled with Spiritfarer on the side.
Connor meanwhile wandered around his library in an aimless haze but still managed to play through most of Zero Ranger, get through Phantom Liberty, and even complete some random pickups like Evan's Remains.
Top 10 Resident Evil Games
Join Parrott, Mokey, and Addi as they debate their favorite games in this seminal horror series... just in time for the spooky season! Try not to be too scared as discussion goes from chainsaw wielding maniacs to zombies, scaly monsters, biohazard creatures and so many more! Which game will be crowned number 1? And will there be screams of horror... or just anger?
Longtalk - Baldur's Gate III
Straw and Connor are joined by rising YouTube star, Rioichi, to get on the weeds recounting our experience playing this year's most grandiose RPG experience. It's hard not to talk about it when a game delivers on 100 hours of reactive, novel, and interesting adventure, whether it all works or not. So be ready for a long talk among long talks here and oh boy are there spoilers.
Monthly Update - September 23
The Universe is filled with many seemingly paradoxical phenomena. Chief amongst them is the belief that your backlog will shrink.
Strawhat caught the latest Indie darling JRPG, Sea of Stars; finally got around to seeing what the fuss was all about with Hi-Fi Rush; and—most surprising of all—is actually enjoying One Piece (Live Action) well enough.
Parrott found another gem of a jump game with Poi; lived out the dream of "evicting" all of the rowdy neighbors with Party Hard; and threw around Mjolnir like a frisbee in Tiny Thor.
Connor had ADD and played like 3 hours of 5 different games, like Sonic Adventure and Lies of P, but somehow at least saw the credits roll in Starfield.
So pull up, relax, and catch up with the boys for another month as the holiday season begins its slow ramp up.
The Spider-Man Super Special
With the release of Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 coming up quickly, Parrott decided to gather three fellow fans to discuss all things Spider-Man. Radec, Moo, and Alexis help break down all the movies (with spoilers!), discuss tons of video games and tv shows, as well as talk about obscure villains like the Gibbon. Will Parrott lose his mind being forced to talk about the Morbius movie? Listen and find out!
Top 10 2D Mario Games
Joined by two special guests Poot and Sean we set out to accomplish a tall task: ranking the 2D Mario games! Will Super Mario Land somehow snag the top spot? Which hosts love Super Mario Bros. 2? Did anyone adore Super Mario Run? Listen to find out!
Longtalk-Conker's Bad Fur Day
For this episode we had super Conker fan Addi take the reigns, and guide us through one of the strangest and most unique games ever made.
Monthly Update-August 2023
This month we had an explosion of things starting with the letter B! Baldur's Gate 3 , took over the month for Connor and Strawhat. Barbie, was seen by both Parrott and Strawhat, and finally a battle took place regarding Chaos;Head Noah.
We also did our first group topic, so let us know what you think!
Super Mario 64/Sunshine Special
For our platformer of the month game club we decided to revisit two very special Nintendo platformers that are near and dear to our hearts. Join our usual hosts along with a couple special guests as we discuss our origins with each game, our favorite worlds, songs, and much more!
Top 10 - Mass Effect Companions
The results of the 2023 Mass Effect Companions Poll are in! There are some suprises and some very-not-surprises, but all around some good nostalgia looking back on such a pivotal trilogy for the RPG genre. This time we have Brandon joining us for the discussion, as well as a few... special messages towards the very end that we hope you'll stick around for.
Monthly Update - July 2023
Today we're dropping the v1.1 update of the show, now featuring a more streamlined format for greater ergonomics with brainrot delivery.
Strawhat solved some spoopy point-and-click mysteries with Ghost Trick, got a fix of late SNES-era JRPG goodness with Chained Echoes, and caught up on the plight of two washed out cartoon heroes with Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (2022).
Parrott's librarian hand delivered him a copy of the venerable Resident Evil 4 Remake and Addi hand delivered him a copy of the vaunted rouguelike Dead Cells. Oh, and he might have started Pikmin 4.
Connor had another go with Grim Dawn to see if he could work past old traumas, picked up a new trauma in the mobile game Arknights, and watched the intrigue-filled Classroom of the Elite and its often very traumatized characters.
Feel free to leave any feedback on the changes in the forums, our engineers will be happy to be in there telling you about how you're just using it wrong.
Longtalk - BioShock
[EPISODE INCLUDES SPOILERS]
This year (and several months ago at this point) Strawhat began his evolution into a shooter game player with the all-time classic BioShock. Eager to huff that sweet, sweet Art Deco nostalgia Connor joined him with a replay of his own and then grabbed fellow BioShock simp, Addiholic, for a good long chat.
Top 10 Game Boy Advance Games
Strawhat and Parrott got together to do our very first console library top 10, the Nintendo Game Boy Advance! Join us as we each go through our favorite games, along with lots of nostalgic memories and tons of audience submissions. Don't worry: there is some e-Reader talk as well!
Monthly Update - June 2023
This month, the crew pretends they made a dent in their lists as the Steam Summer Sale looms right around the corner:
Strawhat's Nintendo loving self of course dug into Tears of the Kingdom, alongside the atmospheric Blasphemous, and the all-time classic Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday. Also there's some baking show reality TV in there somewhere.
Parrott got another hit of adorable-robot-jumping games with Haiku the Robot, finished out the Trilogy of All-Time Spark the Electric Jester, indulged in the boomer-shooter Dusk, and — of course — watched more Survivor.
Connor experienced the LSD trip that is PS5 debut title Bugsnax (winner of the first Community Justice roulette wheel), burned days of time playing through Xenoblade Chronicles, then went all in on Final Fantasy XVI on day one. No reality TV was watched.
Hope you enjoy!
Longtalk-Earthbound
Mokey and Arcitee join Strawhat to discuss the legendary game Earthbound. One of the SNES' best games and still holds up today. Listen for some of our favorite parts and bosses
Top 10 Weapons
In this episode we talk about our favorite weapons in video games. We also did not use these weapons on each other during the recording *allegedly*
The Fromsoft Poll Special
Since the 2011 release of Dark Souls, Fromsoft began to truly cement themselves as a mainstay of the industry, inspiring a special cul— I mean sub-community of gamers who have followed their releases with bated breaths... even if it took some of them several years to actually finish any of them.
For this episode, Connor brought on guest hosts Never, Mokey, and Sam to reminisce on their Fromsoft journeys and comment on the results of the latest server dual-poll: Top 10 Fromsoft Bosses and Top 3 Fromsoft Games.
So pull up and laugh along with a crowd of people who are so deep-in that they consider 4 hours of failed boss attempts a, "Cozy gaming memory."
Monthly Update - May 2023
The boiz were gamin' this month. And we might have actually watched some cinema, too.
Straw got through BioShock 2 and Kena: Bridge of Spirits, revisited his GBA days with Mega Man Battle Network, and even finally got around to seeing Princess Bride thanks to his wife.
Parrott (who has yet to watch Princess Bride) decided it would be a good idea to play Sonic: Unleashed, then thankfully offset that with Metroid Prime Remastered and Rollerdrome... Only to then indulge in another month of Survivor viewing.
Connor put down 100 hours on a machine translation of Kuro no Kiseki 2, then tried to fill the hole in his heart that left with Chainsaw Man, John Wick 4, and World End Economica. Now there are three holes in his heart and a nasty looking tear.
Hope you enjoy!
Longtalk-DK 64
Addi Kong joins to discuss the famous and often maligned DK 64. Parrott and strawhat continue to glow with collectathon adoration, but is Connor ready to destroy the genre for good thanks to this game? Find out in the episode!
Top 10 Zelda Games
In honor of the newest release in this famous series, Parrott got together with two big fans of the series, Sean and Edwin, to discuss their top 10 Legend of Zelda games. Look forward to hearing lots of laughter, friendly debate, and hurt feelings as we reveal how three very different individual lists created this definitive ranking.
Monthly Update - April 2023
This month we didn't have much to talk about until suddenly we had nearly 2 hours of things to talk about. Some of us maintained a nice balance in our monthly media selections... some of us spent practically the entire month on one game.
But hey, if the brainrot is good, it's good.
Top 10 "Bad" Games We Like
Connor, parrott, and strawhat decide to sit down and make fun of game critics for giving games below a 70 on Metacritic that deserver way higher then that!
Monthly Update - March 2023
Spring has arrived but clean as we might, the Backlog only grows. Strawhat hit a streak of bangers, Connor got hit hard with the co-op brainrot, and Parrott finally gave in and picked up his perfect console. Whatever else was going on, at least the games were good.
Enjoy!
PAX East 2023
Since Parrott and our friend, Sean Mason, were able to attend this year, we decided to sit down and regale Connor with tales of their discoveries as he once again misses out on the party. Mostly we chat about the notable games, but also the general convention going experience and any other notable findings.
Longtalk - Banjo-Kazooie
This episode we talk about one of the best 3D platformers ever(in Parrott and strawhat's opinion). Connor is playing it for the first time, so will he agree or will Parrott add to list of reasons to finish him off!
Top 10 Trails in the Sky Characters
It's time for our long awaited episode, and we are releasing it early because you waited long enough. The listeners submitted their opinions and we were joined by a special guest Daloofus to decide this tough top 10. Emotions were high and one host might already be dead. Top 10 Sky characters coming in hot!
Monthly Update - February 2023
The winter is halfway through to the relief of some and the great despair of one (Connor). We continue to do as we do and spent most of Feb playing games: Straw's Link to the Past run meets tragedy; Parrott continues his quest to finish sub-10-hour game made; and Connor continues his sudden quest to finish every localized Fire Emblem game.
Longtalk - Fire Emblem Engage
Now that Straw's finished it, we had a more we wanted to talk about on Fire Emblem Engage. Apparently a lot more, because this ended up being longer than the entire General Episode and we still had to skim over some topics. For fans of the series we hope you enjoy this deep dive into what made this game so fun for us.
For non-fans, maybe you'll catch a little bit of our energy and check it out... We do spoil several major plotpoints of the game, though, so beware if that matters to you.
Top 10 Visual Novels
Visual Novels: the hybrid genre that rules in the shadows cast by the gaming and literature worlds; a genre that has feasted in secret, growing until it now threatens to permanently transform both industries for good or ill; a genre that fittingly forms one of the fundamental pillars of Weebdom.
We quite like them. So, in Backlog Brainrot fashion, we're ranking our favorites as we talk about em.
